Following today's classes, the Red, Yellow and Blue Language Arts classes will have completed the first of three days in the Athena Middle School Library, where they will have begun working on the Unit 2 Library Project. While students will be generating two "products," a story and a PowerPoint presentation, the focus of this activity will also be on processes: research and communication skills. The project will begin with students participating in a Listening activity which will mirror part of the ELA 8 Assessment. Students will listen to a selection, take notes and answer three questions which will test their comprehension of what was read. The selection used in this activity (either the myth "The Maid in the Mist" or, our own, Nick Abreu's "Why The Elephant Has A Trunk") will also serve as a model for the next part of the project.
Following the listening activity, students will be asked to search for two examples from the genre of Native American Myth/Folklore/Legend, read them, and complete a graphic organizer in which they consider whether the intent (author's purpose) of the story was achieved by the piece. Both the researched stories, as well as the listening activity selection will then act as models as students draft their own story.
There will be no Homework following this first day in the library, though the next day we will begin drafting a story of their own; one which inlcudes the basic elements of a myth or folktale.
