There are quite a few advantages to living in upstate New York which come along with the occasional snow event. While one could complain about the snow, perhaps it is better to consider the opportunities the weather can present: the tendency to draw is inside to tend to our families, the chance for some much-needed shoveling-exercise, having the time to walk the neighborhood to inspect the accumulation and allowing the time catch up on some reading.
This first stanza from "The Snow Storm" by Ralph Waldo Emerson seemed particularly relevant, given this weekend's weather:
Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,Read Up and Write On!
Arrives the snow, and, driving o'er the fields,
Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air
Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,
And veils the farmhouse at the garden's end.
The sled and traveler stopped, the courier's feet
Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit
Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed
In a tumultuous privacy of storm.
