Choices, Choices, Choices!

Students have been assigned their Unit 1 Nightjohn Take-Home Tests in Language Arts classes today (Friday) and Monday. This assessment consists of two parts (Group A and Group B) with a combined total value of 100 points! The directions for the entire test is:

CHOOSE ONE FROM EACH GROUPS (A & B) OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES TO COMPLETE. Each should represent your best effort and include details from the reading. Your use of Conventions will be part of the grade.
The Group A set of prompts, from which student must complete ONE are:
1. A "cartoon" depicting the relationship between Sarny with a brief, detailed explanatory ¶.
2. Nightjohn illustration with a brief, detailed explanatory ¶.
3. Design and make a “Wanted” poster for Nightjohn, the escaped slave.
4. Design a new book jacket for the novel Nightjohn.
The Group B set of prompts, from which student must complete ONE are:
1. Write a brief play in which Sarny, now an adult, tells her children about Nightjohn and thinks back on her life on Waller’s plantation as a slave.
2. A written consideration of Sarny’s speech including specific examples (quotes) of her speech.
3. An examination of the vivid images, scenes, and facts that will stick in the reader’s mind from Nightjohn, as well as a reaction was when you read that part of the book.
4. Compare and contrast the movie and novel including specific details from both.
5. A detailed explanation of why Nightjohn returned from freedom, including thoughts about what this tells us about his character, and about what’s important to him.
Students should be sure to refer to their assignment sheets for specific criteria for each group and option. (It can't all fit here!)

Red Class: Tuesday, October 16
Yellow Class: Wednesday, October 17
Green Class: Tuesday, October 16
Blue Class: Wednesday, October 17
