Our Language Arts classes will soon be starting work with our second novel of the year. In order to transition us from the historically-based drama of Nightjohn to the next book, we will working on a brief unit about The American Tradition.
This mini-unit will have us reading and discussing a number of folktales, myths and legends which are an important part of our American Tradition.Over the next four classes (NOTE: there are four classes in each six day rotation.), we will be reading and working with the following selections from our class text Elements of Literature:
"Sky Woman" (Traditional Seneca)You can expect your student to have work to complete at home with one of these selections every night beginning Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the color class they are part of.
"The Owl Never Sleeps at Night" (Traditional African-American)
"The Orphan Boy and the Elk Dog" (Traditional Blackfoot)
If you have the chance to review your student's work prior to it being turned in for a grade, please remember that I am looking for both 1) their ability to respond to the questions using detail from the reading, but also at 2) how they craft their responses: grammar, punctuation and questions restated.
Most students are off to a great start, and have progressed nicely in their willingness and ability to correctly address the questions!
Read Up and Write On!
